"Tales of Florida Folk Characters"  with storyteller Walt Belcher

After 40 years as a newspaper reporter and columnist, Walt Belcher is telling his stories in performance. He shares humorous accounts of growing up in the South at the Safety Harbor Art and Music Center where he developing a storytelling workshop and story slams. For most of his career with The Tampa Tribune he was a feature writer and television critic. He also taught media writing at the University of Tampa and film appreciation at the University of South Florida, St. Pete. His stories of life in the South are rooted in true experiences inspired by his encounters with people in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. “They say that when you open your mouth and the words tumble out with a Southern accent, people start deducting IQ points. And some of us don’t have that many to spare. Well, I come from a place where “holler” is used three ways: “I hollered at him to jump over the holler log when he was down in the holler.”
